Coach Rick Carlisle said the 39-year-old Kidd's groin had been bothering him and was part of the reason why Delonte West played the entire fourth quarter during Friday night's comeback win over the Orlando Magic.
"It's been something that's been an issue and we have to get resolved," Carlisle said.
Kidd will miss at least four games. That includes three against teams the Mavs are fighting for Western Conference playoff positioning: the Clippers and home and road games against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Kidd has already missed 11 games this season after playing at least 80 games in each of the previous six seasons. He sat four games in January because of a lower back strain, six games in late January and early February because of a strained right calf and rested on March 10, the finale of a nine-game, 12-night stretch.
The Mavs are 7-4 when Kidd, who is averaging career lows of 5.9 points, 5.2 assists and 4.0 rebounds, does not play. Having the 18-year veteran rested and ready for the playoffs is one of their top priorities for the defending NBA champions down the stretch of the regular season.
"He always comes back and is able to get back in the flow quickly," Carlisle said. "Somebody with that much experience, he's done it so many times mentally and physically, he understands how to get back into it. That's a special skill."
The Mavs will have to try to win without Odom for the first time this season against the Clippers.
Odom is in the midst of by far the worst season of his 13-year career, but the Mavericks (30-23) are winless in six games without him. That includes a March 23 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, when Odom didn't play due to a coach's decision for the first time in his career.
Odom tried to play despite a 102-degree fever in Friday's win over the Magic, but he was limited to 13 minutes, scoring only two points and grabbing two rebounds.
Odom snapped out of an awful slump with back-to-back productive games -- a rarity for him this season -- before he became ill. He averaged 10.5 points on 72.7 percent shooting, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists in the previous two games.
