GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas -- Lone Star Park will again celebrate Memorial Day by turning it into Texas' richest day of thoroughbred racing.
Seven stakes races for combined purses of more than $1 million are on Monday's card, highlighted by the $300,000 Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap.
The trainer-jockey combination of Bob Baffert and Martin Garcia has already produced wins in two of Lone Star's biggest races this spring -- the Texas Mile and the Lone Star Derby. Fresh off combining to win the Preakness Stakes, the twosome will combine again with Peachtree Stables' 4-year-old colt Mythical Power, the Texas Mile winner.
The field of eight that will go 1 1/16 miles on dirt also includes Euroears and Fifteen Love. They finished second and third, respectively, in the Texas Mile. Euroears, trained by Lone Star's meet-leading Bret Calhoun, finished a neck behind Mythical Power in that race on April 24.
Awesome Gem, a 7-year-old gelding trained by Craig Dollase, has lifetime winnings of $1.9 million. Regular rider David Flores gets the mount.
