LeBron James headlines ESPYS nominees

The Alabama football team, the Baltimore Ravens, the Chicago Blackhawks, the Miami Heat, the San Francisco Giants, the Oklahoma women's softball team and the U.S. women's Olympic gymnastics team will battle it out for Best Team at the 2013 ESPYS Awards.

The nominees were announced Thursday. The awards will be handed out July 17 (9 p.m. ET, ESPN).

Miguel Cabrera of the Detroit Tigers, LeBron James of the Heat, Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings and Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps are the nominees for Best Male Athlete. Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas, Olympic swimmer Missy Franklin, Baylor and Phoenix Mercury women's basketball star Brittney Griner and tennis player Serena Williams will vie for the Best Female Athlete.

The best championship performance comes down to Joe Flacco in the Super Bowl, James in the NBA Finals, Brad Keselowski in the Sprint Cup chase, and Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants in the World Series.

Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers is among the Best Breakthrough Athlete nominees. He's joined by Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, Los Angeles Dodgers rookie sensation Yasiel Puig, 2012 American League rookie of the year Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, and Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.
