JAN. 28 (awards based on games played Monday-Sunday)
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Texas Tech
The Red Raiders don't look like a program that won just nine games last season (three in Big 12 play). Bob Knight's team also didn't look like the one that lost at Oklahoma 98-72 in the first meeting.
Saturday in Lubbock, Texas Tech won impressively, 92-79. Knight has done a super job and his players were prepared for this challenge. Andre Emmett scored 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. His frontcourt mates, Kasib Powell and Andy Ellis, combined for 37 points.
Texas Tech's last two games have been impressive -- a win over Oklahoma and a 24-point blowout over Eddie Sutton's Oklahoma State squad.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Steve Logan, Cincinnati
The Bearcats are currently enjoying a 19-game win streak, and one of the key reasons is the all-around play of Steve Logan.
He had another big week, keying a pair of Cincinnati victories. First, he scored 25 of his team's 54 points in a win over Saint Louis. Then he pumped in 27 points in a victory at South Florida.
COACH OF THE WEEK: Ben Howland, Pittsburgh
Who would have thought Pittsburgh would be 18-2, including a 6-2 mark in the Big East?
Last week's performances were impressive examples of why Ben Howland should be a candidate for national Coach of the Year. His Panthers took care of business against Syracuse. Pittsburgh followed up with another double-figure win over Georgetown. Howland's team has relied heavily on solid defense; the Panthers held the Hoyas to 5-of-28 shooting in the second half.
SHOCK OF THE WEEK: Texas A&M over Texas
The Aggies were 7-11 entering their game at Texas. The Longhorns came in unbeaten in Big 12 play. But Melvin Watkins' team came away with the upset.
Texas A&M shot lights out, hitting 59.5 percent from the field. Bernard King came through with 30 big points as the Aggies broke a 16-game series losing streak. It was Texas A&M's first win in Austin since 1987.
CO-DIAPER DANDIES OF THE WEEK:
Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon, Connecticut
The dynamic freshman duo did a great job in helping the Huskies defeat Arizona in Tucson.
Gordon scored 23 points (8-of-14 from the field) while adding nine assists. Okafor fell just short of a triple-double, scoring 19 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and blocking nine shots.
Okafor also posted a double-double in a win over St. John's earlier in the week (11 points, 10 rebounds).
