I want to send my sympathy out to the family of John Lotz, who recently passed away at age 64. He was an assistant at North Carolina under Dean Smith before taking over as head coach at Florida.
John was one of the really nice guys, one of the classiest people in the world of college basketball. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, and two daughters.
John Lotz was a vital part of the success of North Carolina basketball.
He always had a smile on his face and enjoyed working at North Carolina as an administrator after his coaching days at Florida ended. John loved Carolina blue, baby!
My last conversation with John was at a restaurant in Chapel Hill. I was in town, working the Duke-North Carolina game. John was battling cancer, and I enjoyed spending time with him as he ate with friends and his lovely wife, Vicki.
He was an ultimate prime-time performer and a vital part of the success of North Carolina basketball. John was an assistant on several Final Four teams. If you don't believe me, make a call to Hall of Fame coach Smith. Dean would tell you John was one of the brightest minds and most decent people you could ever meet.
God bless you, John. We know that you are in heaven.
