NCAA does right by Mario

Dec. 16
Dick's Stock Watch identifies whose stock is up and whose is down over the past week across the world of sports.

Mario Austin

The NCAA did the right thing by reinstating Mississippi State standout Mario Austin. He played well after sitting out six games, scoring 28 points while grabbing nine boards in a 10-point win over nationally ranked Xavier and center David West.

Carson Palmer became the first West Coast recipient of the Heisman since Marcus Allen. The USC quarterback helped his cause with a strong showing against Notre Dame.

LeBron James showed why he's been hyped so much when his St. Vincent-St. Mary team defeated Oak Hill Academy in a high-school game televised nationally by ESPN2. He's the best all-around high-school basketball player I have ever seen.

Marvin Harrison deserves credit for breaking the NFL single-season record for receptions ... and he has a few games to add on to his new mark!

The Jets were in a good position to help their NFL playoff chances. Instead, coach Herman Edwards' team was stunned by a Chicago Bears squad that came in with just three victories.

The Falcons and Saints also allowed the Giants back into the playoff hunt. Both were at home as big favorites, yet they both lost. Atlanta was stunned by Seattle in overtime while New Orleans fell to Minnesota on a late two-point conversion by Daunte Culpepper.

Evander Holyfield should consider hanging up the gloves. He lost a 12-round decision to Chris Byrd for the IBF heavyweight title Saturday night in Atlantic City.
