Once again, it's Lance

July 25, 2005 | Dick's Stock Watch provides a fast-glance review of the past week in the world of sports, charting whose stock is up and whose is down

Lance Armstrong — The cyclist won his record seventh straight Tour de France championship. It's amazing to win anything seven times in a row, and the race is so grueling, truly challenging the endurance and stamina of the athletes. Armstrong, a cancer survivor, showed greatness once again.

Oakland Athletics — The A's have won six games in a row, including a sweep at the Texas Rangers. Oakland is right back in the playoff race.

NHL — The NHL is back following the ratification of a new deal ... it's about time.

Pittsburgh Penguins — The Penguins got the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft lottery, also known as the Sidney Crosby sweepstakes (Crosby is the Canadian phenom, and every team was hoping for the No. 1 pick to select him).

Tom Watson — The veteran golfer won the Senior British Open in a playoff.

San Diego Padres — The Padres have lost seven games in a row, and manager Bruce Bochy's team is just 2½ games ahead of Arizona in the NL West. The Padres are now just one game above .500.

Baltimore Orioles — The Orioles have lost five straight, including a three-game sweep at the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Michael Phelps — The Olympic gold-medal-winning swimmer didn't even qualify for the finals at the 400-meter freestyle at the world championships over the weekend.
