Roy Williams had to be happy during the NBA draft.
He saw four guys that stayed in school, won a national championship and then got drafted.
First was Tyler Hansbrough, picked by the Indiana Pacers. I am tired of hearing people say what this guy can't do. My friends, he has great work ethic and he will be an ideal teammate. Hansbrough will average around 14 points and eight rebounds, so Larry Bird and his staff made a fine choice.
Ty Lawson was picked and traded to Denver. That is a great scenario for him. Coach George Karl is a former Tar Heel who is very familiar with the point guard. Lawson is a winner and he will learn as the back-up to Chauncey Billups. It is a perfect situation.
Wayne Ellington landed with the Timberwolves. I have said that the combination of Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio will not work in Minnesota. The addition of Ellington will be a positive because good shooters can always make it in the pros. Just go look at what Mr. Ellington did at the Final Four and you will understand he belonged in the first round.
Then in round two, Danny Green was taken by the Cavaliers. His outside shooting ability will make him an asset. Cleveland is my early choice to win it all next season over the Spurs. Come on, Shaq and LeBron together! Green should be happy to be joining Mike Brown's squad.
For those who feel the Tar Heels will be struggling next season after losing those four, think again. Williams has the likes of Ed Davis, Deon Thompson and Tyler Zeller returning up front. Marcus Ginyard and Larry Drew return in the backcourt. The Tar Heels have one of the premier recruiting classes in America with David and Travis Wear from California, John Henson, Dexter Strickland and Leslie McDonald.
There will be many happy moments in 2009-10 down on Franklin Street. Williams won't have to rebuild, he will simply reload!
