Out in Bloomington, Ind., they finally got things right.
I have felt for a long time that the school made a big mistake by letting Bob Knight go. Think about all he achieved at that institution: graduating players, not picking up any NCAA violations and winning games.
I can't wait for Indiana to open up its new practice facility. I really believe coach Tom Crean and many others will go to bat to name it after Knight.
My feeling is, Knight deserves that in a big-time way. He also deserves a special gala, where many of his former players will be back. They were such a big part of the history of Indiana basketball.
The Hoosiers have a great leader now in Coach Crean. He is energetic, enthusiastic and passionate. Crean is the perfect guy to restore the tradition of IU basketball. I spoke to him recently, and you could hear it in his voice. You can tell how excited he is about coaching the Hoosiers, and that the future is so bright.
He talked about his incoming class of four freshmen, several having an immediate impact. Guys such as 6-5 guard Maurice Creek, 6-8 forward Christian Watford and former Mr. Basketball Jordan Hulls will help turn Indiana around and will play a vital role.
Jeremiah Rivers, a transfer from Georgetown, also will have a significant role. Look for him to be more aggressive taking the ball to the basket and working off screens. He will be an impact player from the first day he takes the court.
Indiana will improve dramatically. The Hoosiers were 6-25 last season, so there is plenty of room for improvement. They scrapped and clawed with limited talent last season. The personnel is getting better and better. Within the next three years, Crean will have Indiana back in the national Top 25. This season, the toughness of the Big Ten will create some problems. Five teams were picked among the top 18 of the preseason ESPN/USA Today rankings.
Look for days when the Hoosiers score shocking wins. Crean's motivational ability, enthusiasm, teaching ability and spirit will help this program rebuild. Indiana made the right choice bringing him in as coach.
Crean represents the red sweater in a positive way.
Hey, Indiana, make sure you properly honor Knight by naming the new practice facility after him.
