Roundball chatter

Each week I'll write about the sport I love, college basketball:

• Congratulations to Florida coach Billy Donovan on his new deal. Donovan and the Gators went out and celebrated with a big win over Texas A&M. Also congrats are in order for a couple of coaches reaching milestones. Washington's Lorenzo Romar won his 200th game at the school with a win over UCSB. Romar joins Hec Edmundson and Marv Harshman as the only coaches with 200 wins in school history. Ohio State's Thad Matta won his 200th game as Buckeye coach when Ohio State beat South Carolina.

• The doubleheader at Conseco Fieldhouse featuring Butler against Purdue and Indiana vs. Notre Dame was great for college basketball. It is great for the fans, the players, and maybe tough on coaches but it is a major positive. The building was sold out and it created a positive atmosphere in the basketball-crazed state of Indiana. Next year Notre Dame and Purdue will meet and I think they should continue this type of event for years to come.

• One of my favorite players to watch in college basketball is Purdue's Robbie Hummel. I am so happy that he has been healthy this season. He is such a hard worker and a versatile player for Matt Painter's Boilermakers.

• A number of fans have tweeted to me about the Big East being down. When you compare it to where it has been, it is down a bit but a lot of leagues would love to be where the Big East is now. It is still one of the top leagues in basketball with Connecticut, Syracuse, Louisville, Pittsburgh and Marquette to name a few. While it may not be as strong from top to bottom as in the past, you have to put it up there with the Big Ten and SEC among the elite leagues in the sport. Next year the Big East takes a hit without Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Memphis has been a bit of a disappointment so far this season. I thought the Tigers would be a little bit better. That said, something tells me that Josh Pastner's team will get on a little run and be a tough team in conference play. There is just too much talent on that squad.

• Louisville coach Rick Pitino deserves a lot of credit as his Cardinals remain undefeated. There have been numerous times where his team has been shorthanded due to injuries, but Louisville simply keeps on rolling.

• How about a salute to St. Joseph's coach Phil Martelli as his Hawks got a big win over crosstown rival Villanova. This team could be dangerous in the A-10 this season.

Perry Jones III had a monster game in a win at BYU, a tough place to get a W. He is just the latest sports star at Baylor, with Robert Griffin III winning the Heisman and Brittney Griner being a force in women's hoops.
