Roundball Chatter for May 13

• I love the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and this season's event is even bigger with the addition of Syracuse, Pittsburgh and Notre Dame to the ACC. All 12 Big Ten teams and 12 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2013 Challenge, including the three newest ACC members Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Clemson, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest will not play in the 2013 event. Among the marquee matchups are Michigan at Duke; North Carolina at Michigan State; Indiana at Syracuse and Notre Dame at Iowa. That last game pits former Irish assistant Fran McCaffery against his former employer.

• Trae Golden has decided to transfer from Tennessee. The guard was the team's third-leading scorer at over 12 PPG. There were published reports that Golden's decision was based on academic issues. It is a blow to Cuonzo Martin's team.

• Just when you thought conference re-alignment moves might slow down, Davidson opted to join the Atlantic 10 starting in 2014-15. Oakland University decided to go from the Summit to the Horizon League. I like the way the A-10 has made up for several defections in recent years. Bob McKillop has an excellent program at Davidson and that is a good addition.

• Washington coach Lorenzo Romar made a solid addition to his staff, bringing in T. J. Otzelberger from Iowa State. Otzelberger was an assistant at Iowa State for seven seasons and has been associate head coach for the Cyclones since 2010. He will certainly help with recruiting and preparation for opponents this season.

• 6-8 forward Darius Paul, who was my MAC diaper dandy of the year while at Western Michigan, has also decided to leave. He is going to Illinois, where his older brother Brandon starred. It is a great pick-up for coach John Groce.

• Arizona State suffered a setback when 6-1 guard Evan Gordon decided to transfer. Gordon started 25 games and was Arizona State's third-leading scorer with 10.1 points as a junior last season.

• UCLA, Missouri, Nevada and Northwestern highlight this year's eight-team tournament field in the 13th annual Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Nov. 28-29, 2013. . Each team will play four games in the Las Vegas Invitational, with the first two at on-campus venues and the final two rounds at Orleans Arena.
