Reid reign ends in Philly

From Elias: Andy Reid was fired as head coach of the Eagles Monday. Reid's 224th and final regular-season game as head coach of the Eagles ended with a 42-7 loss to the Giants. That's the second-largest margin of defeat for a head coach in his final game for a team that he had coached for at least 100 games. Joe Walton's 111-game tenure with the Jets, and with it, "Joe must go" chants, ended with a 37-0 loss to the Bills two days before Christmas in 1989.

Lovie is now a castaway

From Elias: The Bears fired head coach Lovie Smith on Monday. Chicago was the sixth team in the Super Bowl era to fail to reach the postseason despite starting a season 7-1 or 8-0. The five other teams all retained their head coach for the start of the next season: the Rams in 1968 (George Allen), Dolphins in 1975 (Don Shula), Chargers in 1987 (Al Saunders), Saints in 1988 (Jim Mora) and Redskins in 1996 (Norv Turner).

A December to remember for the King

From Elias: LeBron James averaged 27.5 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game in December while making 55% of his shots from the floor. Only two other players in NBA history reached all those levels in a calendar month in which they played at least 10 games. Wilt Chamberlain did it in February 1967 (28.6 PPG, 25.8 Reb/G, 8.9 Ast/G, .721 FG%) and Larry Bird did that in March 1987 (29.7/9.8/8.3/.555).

Miami Heat

Vucevic can't win the game by himself

From Elias: Nikola Vucevic scored 20 points and hauled in 29 rebounds in Orlando's overtime loss to Miami. Over the last dozen seasons (since 2001-02) only one other player had that many points and rebounds in a NBA game: Kevin Love scored 31 points and grabbed 31 rebounds in a game against the Knicks on Nov. 12, 2010. The last player to have numbers like that in a losing cause was Atlanta's Kevin Willis (20 points, 33 rebounds) in an overtime loss to Washington on Feb. 19, 1992.

Orlando Magic, Miami Heat

The tradition continues in Houston

From Elias: The Rockets played a home game on New Year's Eve for the 11th straight season (2002-12). That's the longest streak of consecutive years hosting a game on December 31 for any team in NBA history. The next-longest streaks are eight years by the Clippers (2002-09) and Sonics/Thunder (who played at home for the eighth straight year on Monday).

Houston Rockets

The Rockets are scoring points in bunches

From Elias: The Rockets beat the Hawks, 123-104. It was the seventh time this season that Houston scored at least 120 points in a game, two more than any other NBA team. Last season, the Rockets did not score 120 points in any of their 66 games, with a season high of 114 at Washington on Jan. 16.

Asik cleans only one window

From Elias: Omer Asik grabbed 17 rebounds, all off the defensive glass, in the Rockets' win over the Hawks. It was the most rebounds in a game, none offensive, for an NBA player since Boston's Kevin Garnett had the same numbers against Chicago on Dec. 3, 2010. The last Rockets player to have a line like that was Rudy Tomjanovich on Jan. 31, 1976 at New York (also 17 rebounds).

Bobcats end skid with a win over the Bulls

From Elias: The Bobcats ended an 18-game losing streak with a victory over the Bulls. It was the longest losing streak any team has ever concluded with a win over Chicago. The previous long was a 15-game skid the Cavaliers vanquished with a 111-101 win over the Bulls on Nov. 6, 2002.

Charlotte Bobcats, Chicago Bulls

The Bobcats look forward to 2013

From Elias: The Bobcats finished 2012 with a 14-80 record this year (.149). That's the third-worst record for an NBA team that played at least 50 games in one year in league history. The Providence Steamrollers went 7-47 (.130) in 1948 and the Mavericks went 11-73 (.131) in 1993.

Charlotte Bobcats

Big third quarter for Spurs

From Elias: The Spurs outscored the Nets, 30-5, in the third quarter Monday night. That's two points shy of the most points the Spurs have ever outscored an opponent by in one quarter of an NBA game. The Spurs outscored the Kings, 40-13, in the fourth quarter on April 7, 1990.

San Antonio Spurs, Brooklyn Nets

Small third quarter for the Nets

From Elias: The Nets made only two of 20 shots from the floor in the third quarter Monday night (10%). It was the worst shooting non-overtime quarter for the Nets since April 9, 2008 when they shot 1-for-20 (5%) in the fourth quarter at Cleveland.

Brooklyn Nets

Durant scores big in 2012

From Elias: Kevin Durant scored 30 points for the Thunder on Monday night in their win over Phoenix, giving him 2,567 points in 2012. Over the 15-year span from 1997 through 2011, only one NBA player scored that many points in one year: Kobe Bryant in 2006 (2,688).

Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns

By George I think he's got it

From Elias: Paul George scored 21 points in the Pacers' win over the Grizzlies. George scored 282 points in 15 games in December, the most he has scored in any calendar month in his NBA career. George's previous high for points in a month was 221 in March 2012.
