ASPEN, Colo. -- Maybe three-time defending X Games snowboard superpipe champion Shaun White doesn't need to practice.

In his first return to halfpipe competition since winning the Olympic gold medal last year, the 24-year-old California action king leads the field of eight qualifiers late Thursday heading into Sunday's finals. White used his back-to-back double-cork 1080s on his first of two laps to post the night's top score of 92.00. Fellow 2010 Olympic medalist Scotty Lago qualified second with 85.33, and Peetu Piiroinen of Finland was third with 82.00.
