Are you ready for some racin'?
Our reader-generated Top 10 lists have been mostly about football with a little baseball mixed in (kind of like real life). We're not doing an NBA list until they prove to us that the NBA still exists.
But another sport is in the climatic part of its season. Yes, NASCAR is having its Chase. The "Chase" has a cap "C," which proves it's important. So we're asking you to put down your Fantasy Football rosters for a moment and participate in a different list this week: "Top 10 Reasons You're Not In The Chase." As always, send your suggestions to firstname.lastname@example.org -- including your first name, initial of your last name and your location.
What is the Chase? It's actually nothing more than the last 10 races of the NASCAR season. But they got smart in 2004 and declared the top 12 drivers would compete during the 10-race Chase to win the Cup. (Don't ask about the Cup, 'cause we've got to move along and the sponsor changes every couple of years anyway.)
How do they determine the top 12? That process changes every year, too, but essentially NASCAR sets the rules to make sure Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualifies. Of course Jimmy Johnson always wins eventually (as he did in Sunday's race).
Note that all the other drivers don't flatten their tires and go away. They keep racing for prize money even though they cannot win the coveted Cup. This must be an odd way to compete, knowing you haven't been eliminated but still can't win. Our suggestion is that all the non-Chase cars have a big "L" on their hoods to stand for "Losers." So far NASCAR has not returned our phone calls.
We will consider all of your suggestions for "Top 10 Reasons You're Not In The Chase." You have until noon Wednesday to send your entries for the list that will appear here Thursday.
