Like everyone else, I was shocked and saddened on Nov. 7, 1991, when I got the news Earvin "Magic" Johnson was HIV-positive. At the time, I was a freelance writer for the Village Voice and quickly started working on a piece about the significance of Magic's announcement.
That's from Nelson George, who went on to direct "The Announcement," a documentary on Johnson's journey since his stunning news conference.
Watch an excerpt above, in which Chris Rock and Pat Riley and others speak about the shocking moment, and catch the full film Sunday night at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
