FOXBORO, Massachusetts - Veteran guard Brenden Stai informed the New England Patriots Sunday of his intention to retire from football.

The 31-year-old Stai played eight years in the NFL, starting 96 of 105 games. He spent the first five years of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by one-year stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2000), Detroit Lions (2001) and Washington Redskins (2002).

The Patriots signed Stai to serve as a backup to starters Mike Compton and Joe Andruzzi.
