BRONX, New York - Looking for additional relief help, the New York Yankees on Friday acquired righthanded setup man Felix Rodriguez from the Philadelphia Phillies for aging center fielder Kenny Lofton.

The hard-throwing Rodriguez, 31, was 5-8 with a 3.29 ERA in 76 games for the San Francisco Giants and Phillies last season, striking out 59 in 65 2/3 innings.

Rodriguez was acquired by the Phillies on July 30 for outfielder Ricky Ledee. In 23 appearances with Philadelphia, he posted a 2-3 record and 3.00 ERA.

The Phillies were looking for a center fielder after Marlon Byrd struggled last season.

The 37-year-old Lofton backed up Bernie Williams in New York last season, batting .275 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 83 games. He collected his 2,000th career hit in Cleveland on August 25.
