PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Penguins re-signed restricted free agent goaltender Sebastien Caron and gave him some competition by adding Martin Brochu to the mix Friday.

Caron, who received a multi-year deal, was a 22-year-old rookie backup to Johan Hedberg last season. He went 7-14-2 with two shutouts, a 2.64 goals-against average and .916 save percentage.

A 6-1, 170-pound native of Quebec, Caron was a fourth-round draft pick of Pittsburgh's in 1999.

Brochu, 30, played eight games in the Russia Elite League last season and one in a Quebec semi-pro league. He played six games for Vancouver in 2001-02, a year after being named the American Hockey League's Most Valuable Player.

While Brochu has played in only eight NHL games, he is 150-128-35 with a 2.97 GAA in 348 AHL appearances. He went 59-34-11 with two different teams between the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons.

Hedberg, 30, is expected to enter training camp as the starter. He was 14-22-4 with a 3.14 GAA and .895 save percentage last season.
