NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Saints released 12 players on Monday including running back Curtis Keaton.

Keaton was acquired from Cincinnati last season for a fourth-round draft pick to be a backup for Deuce McAllister. Keaton had trouble learning the playbook, however and little success on the field.

Keaton did not play in the Saints' 27-12 loss to the San Francisco 49ers Saturday night. Newly signed running back Ki-Jana Carter, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1995 draft, had the bulk of the action after McAllister left in the third quarter. Also released were: cornerback Reggie Doster, guard Shawn Draper, cornerback Lynaris Elpheage, wide receiver Ira Gooch, safety Corey Hall, wide receiver Terrell Harris, punter Mark Mariscal, tackle Jared Peck, wide receiver Terrill Shaw, fullback Demetrius Smith and running back Walt Williams.
