PITTSBURGH -- Defenseman Drake Berehowsky and left wing Reid Simpson, both unrestricted free agents, signed Friday with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Berehowsky became the second free agent defenseman to agree to terms in as many days. On Thursday, the Penguins signed Patrick Boileau, who spent part of last season with the Detroit Red Wings.

Berehowsky, signed to add a physical presence to the Penguins' defense, had one goal and two assists in seven games with Phoenix last season. The Coyotes recently bought out his 2003-04 contract for $800,000, making him a free agent.

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Berehowsky has 31 goals and 94 assists in 493 career games with the Penguins, Toronto, Edmonton, Nashville, Vancouver and Phoenix. He missed the first 59 games of last season recovering from knee surgery.

Simpson had one assist in 26 games with Nashville last season. He has 18 goals and 18 assists in 299 career games with Philadelphia, Minnesota, New Jersey, Chicago, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Montreal and Nashville.
