BALDWIN, New York - New York Jets Pro Bowl defensive end John Abraham was charged with drunken driving Wednesday night after he drove his sports utility vehicle into a fire hydrant and lightpole.

Abraham pleaded not guilty on Thursday and was released on his own recognizance, according to a spokesman for the Nassau County district attorney's office.

The misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated carries a maximum sentence of up to a year in jail.

Abraham and the two passengers in his SUV were not injured in the crash which occurred on Long Island's Grand Avenue.

Regarded as the Jets' best defensive player, Abraham made the Pro Bowl in 2001 and 2002. He has 2 1/2 sacks in four games this season.

The incident is another dark cloud in a stormy year for the Jets, who are 0-4 and in a bye week.

A first-round pick in 2000, Abraham has totaled 23 sacks over the last two seasons.
