HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington threw during seven-on-seven drills at practice Thursday.

Pennington, who throws right-handed, dislocated and broke his left wrist in the preseason and is not expected back for several weeks. But this was the first time he threw during practice since the injury, tossing 12 passes and completing eight of them.

He also stayed about 30 minutes afterward, working on footwork, throwing and conditioning, just as he did Wednesday. Coach Herman Edwards said Pennington might start practicing during team drills next week.

"It was good to see him in the huddle and throwing the football," Edwards said. "He's getting closer to being healed."

Pennington seems to be ahead of schedule in his recovery. On Monday, he threw about 50 times in a 20-minute period for the first time since the injury. There is a chance he could return for the Philadelphia game Oct. 26.

Since he discussed his rehabilitation Monday, Pennington declined comment Thursday and instead issued a statement.

"Every day is exciting for me because I get a chance to do what I love, play football," Pennington said.
