Valdosta holds off late UAM rally

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -- Valdosta State nearly lost its high national ranking with a late Arkansas-Monticello rally.

The Boll Weevils scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to close a 31-14 Valdosta lead to 31-28, but the Blazers were able to hold off UAM and protect its No. 2 ranking in NCAA Division II. (No. 1 Grand Valley State also won Saturday.)

Valdosta State (6-0, 4-0 Gulf South Conference) made it 31-14 early in the fourth with a 64-yard pass from Tyran Robinson to Tyrone Jordan. UAM (2-4, 1-3) scored twice in the last 10 minutes, on an 18-yard run by quarterback Cory Allred and a 14-yard pass from Allred to Devon Stewart.

The last score came with less than a minute left.

North Alabama, ranked 11th, had an easier time with Ouachita Baptist, winning 41-14 at Florence, Ala.

Will Hall threw for 312 yards and Randy Vickers ran for two touchdowns for North Alabama (6-0, 4-0).

MontoyaBrown rushed 19 times for 66 yards and a touchdown to lead Ouachita (2-3, 1-3). Tigers quarterback Chris Lammers was 13-of-25 for 177 yards but was sacked five times and intercepted once.

At Conway, Southern Arkansas' Ted Williams threw an 80-yard TD pass to Torrence Jones to lift the Muleriders to a 28-21 victory over Central Arkansas. The Muleriders (4-2, 2-2) trailed 21-14 late in the third until Jabari Woods scored on a 16-yard run with 4:21 left to tie it 21-21.

The Bears (2-3, 0-4) scored three times in the second quarter, on runs for 2 and 7 yards by Kentrel Rogers and a 1-yard run by Willie Hopson.

Henderson State held off a rally by West Alabama to clinch a 41-36 victory at Arkadelphia. The Reddies (4-2, 3-1) had 369 rushing yards in the contest, with Scotty Wilson carrying for 110, quarterback Blake Christenson for 107 and Arthur Burnett carrying for 99. West Alabama fell to 2-4, 1-3.

Harding improved to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in the Gulf South with a 25-21 victory over West Georgia at Searcy. The Bisons trailed 14-3 after the first quarter, but Adam Lybrand, in his second start, threw TD passes to David Feliciano (24 and 5 yards) and Reid Smith (76 yards).

Lybrand finished the game with 367 yards. West Georgia fell to 2-4 and 1-3.

In a Southwestern Athletic Conference game, Jermaine Joseph had the only touchdown in Texas Southern's 7-6 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The first-quarter score stood up for the entire game.

Texas Southern improved to 3-3, 2-2.

UAPB (2-5, 1-4) scored on a pair of field goals in the second half by Michael Seller, for 28 and 23 yards. Seller missed a 29-yard attempt with 2:48 in the fourth.
