Kentucky State coach suspended
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Kentucky State basketball coach Winston Bennett was suspended without pay by the Division II school Friday after being accused of assaulting a player.
The university and campus police are investigating the former Kentucky star, athletic director Derrick Ramsey said. Assistant Tom Patterson will run the team during the investigation.
Ramsey declined to discuss what happened, except to say it occurred during a morning practice and the entire team was there. Ramsey described Bennett as "remorseful and saddened."
Bennett, hired as coach in 2000, played at Kentucky from 1983-88. He was an assistant under Rick Pitino at Kentucky and followed him to the Boston Celtics.
