KENT, Ohio -- Junior center Nate Gerwig, who set a Kent State record by shooting 64 percent from the field last season, had knee surgery this week and will miss the 2003-04 season.

"Any time a player suffers a season-ending injury we feel badly for him," Golden Flashes coach Jim Christian said Friday. "But we hurt for Nate because he had worked so hard during the summer to rehabilitate a previous injury."

Despite being hampered by a shoulder injury last season, the 6-foot-9 Gerwig averaged 7.6 points and 4.1 rebounds. He started 28 games while Kent State went 22-9 and reached the NIT.

Gerwig underwent surgery on his right knee Thursday. The school said he had been bothered by a knee problem, but didn't disclose his injury.
