Tamarando wins Del Mar Futurity on closing day
DEL MAR, Calif. -- Tamarando rallied for a half-length victory Wednesday in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity for 2-year-olds on closing day of the summer meet at the seaside track.
Rafael Bejarano won his second consecutive jockeys' title at Del Mar with 46 victories. Martin Garcia finished second with 28 and Victor Espinoza was third with 27.
John Sadler earned his third trainers' title and first in four years with 27 winners. Doug O'Neill finished second with 24, and Hall of Famer Bob Baffert was third with 23.
Ridden by Julien Leparoux, Tamarando rallied on the far outside in the stretch, covering seven furlongs on the synthetic surface in 1:23.07 and paying $17.80, $7.60 and $4.60.
Dance with Fate returned $5.60 and $4.60, while Can the Man was another half-length back in third and paid $4.80 to show.
Alberts Hope, the 7-2 favorite, was fourth.
Tamarando's sire, Bertrando, won the 1991 Futurity and later became champion older horse of 1993.
Tamarando earned $180,000 for the victory, his second in four career starts for Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
In the $100,000 Oak Tree Juvenilie Turf, Diamond Bachelor led all the way to win by 2½ lengths under Leparoux.
He ran a mile on the turf in 1:34.36 to remain undefeated in two starts and earn $60,000. He paid $4.60 as the 6-5 favorite.
Ontology was second, and Home School was third.
In the $105,040 Pirate's Bounty Stakes, Private Zone defeated 14-1 shot Ain't No Other by a neck win.
Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Private Zone ran six furlongs in 1:09.03 and paid $8.60 for his fourth win in 18 career starts. He earned $57,240. Chiloquin was third.
In the $94,870 C.E.R.F. Stakes for older fillies and mares, 3-5 favorite Gypsy Robin and jockey Mike Smith won by three-quarters of a length over Madame Cactus.
Gypsy Robin ran six furlongs in 1:09.59 and paid $3.20 to win for her sixth victory in 11 career starts. The victory was worth $55,800.
Wednesday was third.
