PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies have called up Cody Asche from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will give the former third baseman his first career start in left field against Colorado on Friday night.

Veteran outfielder Grady Sizemore was designated for assignment to make room for Asche. Sizemore batted .245 (24 for 98) with six RBI.

Asche was sent to the minors to learn to play the outfield after the Phillies brought up prospect Maikel Franco to play third base. Asche batted.245 (26 for 106) with two homers and four RBI before he was sent down.

Ben Revere moves from left field to right field to accommodate Asche.
