OAKLAND, California -- Joel Pineiro, who has struggled mightily in 2004, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday by the Seattle Mariners.

Pineiro, 25, experienced soreness in his right elbow following an 6-2 win over the Anaheim Angels on Sunday. He allowed a run and struck out seven in eight innings - easily one of his best starts of the season.

It originally was thought that he suffered a season-ending injury, but two MRIs ruled out ligament damage.

Pineiro, who entered the season with 30 wins over the last two seasons, is 6-11 with a 4.67 ERA in 21 starts in 2004.

In a corresponding move, the Mariners recalled infielder Ramon Santiago from Class AAA Tacoma of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
