Cubs sign IF Neifi Perez to minor league deal

MILWAUKEE - Six days after being released by the San Francisco Giants, former Gold Glove winner Neifi Perez signed a minor league contract with the Chicago Cubs.

Perez, 31, will be assigned to Class AAA Iowa of the Pacific Coast League.

Appearing in 120 games for the Giants, Perez hit .232 with 15 extra-base hits and 33 RBIs. He was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies in 1992 and spent eight-plus seasons with them.

In 2000, Perez became the second player in Colorado team history to win a Gold Glove as he was recognized as the National League's top defensive shortstop.

In 1,085 career games, Perez hit .268 with 50 home runs and 394 RBIs.
