Simon released, Cummings recalled

NEW YORK -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays released first baseman-designated hitter Randall Simon on Wednesday and recalled outfielder Midre Cummings from Triple-A Durham.

Simon lasted less than three weeks with the Devil Rays, who signed him on Aug. 19 after he was released by Pittsburgh. He went 2-for-17 (.118) with Tampa Bay and did not have an extra-base hit or an RBIs. He was 0-for-3 with a strikeout Tuesday night in an 11-2 loss to the New York Yankees.

Simon is best remembered for hitting one of the Milwaukee Brewers' racing sausages with his bat during a game at Miller Park in July 2003. He was cited for disorderly conduct and posted a $432 bond which he later forfeited, ending the case.

Cummings was batting .285 with 27 homers and 89 RBIss in 119 games with Durham. He went 1-for-12 with a double and an RBIs during a two-week stint with Tampa Bay in May.

He was in the lineup as the DH, batting fifth, for the first game of Wednesday's scheduled doubleheader against the Yankees, though the start was delayed by rain.
