Blue Jays sign LHP Downs to minor league deal

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday signed free agent lefthander Scott Downs to a minor league contract with an invitation to attend spring training.

Downs split the 2004 season between the Montreal Expos and their Class AAA affiliate in Edmonton of the Pacific Coast League. He went 3-6 with a 5.14 ERA in 12 starts with Montreal and 10-6 with a 3.52 ERA in 22 starts with Edmonton.

The 28-year-old Downs spent parts of four seasons with the Expos after being acquired from the Chicago Cubs.
