Astros take LHP Bogusevic with their first pick
HOUSTON -- Tulane junior pitcher Brian Bogusevic was the first-round pick of the Houston Astros on Tuesday, taken 24th overall in the amateur draft.
Bogusevic, a 6-3, 211-pound left-hander from Oak Lawn, Ill., leads the Green Wave with 13 wins, a 2.72 ERA and 119.1 innings pitched.
Heading into the NCAA super regionals this weekend, he leads Conference USA in innings pitched and his ERA, wins and 119 strikeouts rank second.
Bogusevic also took the field as a position player in 36 games, including 23 starts in right field and seven as a designated hitter. Bogusevic is batting .324 with seven doubles and 21 RBIss while stealing nine bases.
Houston had not taken a left-handed pitcher in the first round since selecting Billy Wagner in 1993.
In the eighth round, the Astros took Roger Clemens' son, Koby, a third baseman from Memorial High School in Houston.
