Pirates put Cota on disabled list following bullpen injury
PITTSBURGH -- Ryan Doumit was recalled by the Pittsburgh Pirates from Triple-A Indianapolis and was in their starting lineup Thursday after catcher Humberto Cota injured his left shoulder warming up pitchers the night before.
Doumit, who can catch, play first base and the outfield, was leading the International League with a .415 average and 20 RBIs. Doumit began the season with the Pirates, but was hitless in three at-bats before being sent down when second baseman Freddy Sanchez was activated off the disabled list.
Doumit is a .235 career hitter in 140 games with Pittsburgh the last three seasons.
Cota was one of two players who went on the disabled list following the Pirates' 4-3, 16-inning victory over Houston on Wednesday night -- neither of whom played. Astros right-hander Rick White injured a muscle in his left side while warming up to pitch and was replaced on the roster Thursday by left-hander Stephen Randolph.
