CINCINNATI -- The Reds claimed catcher Alvin Colina off waivers Tuesday from the Colorado Rockies.

The 26-year-old hit five homers and drove in 35 runs for Triple-A Colorado Springs. He threw out 38 percent of runners trying to steal.

The Reds also began an overhaul of their minor league system, which hasn't been able to produce pitchers for the big league level. The Reds fired Grant Griesser, their assistant director of player development, and field coordinator Tim Naehring.

They also decided not to renew the contracts of minor league instructors Rick Burleson, Jim Hickman and Lynn Jones, Double-A Chattanooga manager Jayhawk Owens and Rookie League Billings coach Ricardo Cuevas.

Minor league pitching coach Grant Jackson is retiring.
