Driver dies after crash that killed Ohio athlete
CINCINNATI -- An 18-year-old driver died following the single-vehicle crash that killed one Cincinnati football player and injured two others, a hospital spokeswoman said Tuesday.
The University of Cincinnati Medical Center confirmed that Sean VanDyne of Hamilton had died, but a spokeswoman said she could not release further details because of medical privacy laws.
Authorities say the crash occurred as VanDyne was driving with three Cincinnati freshmen returning from the Bearcats' 14-0 win Saturday night at Miami University in Oxford, 25 miles north of Cincinnati. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
The crash killed offensive lineman Ben Flick of Hamilton and injured receivers Mark Barr of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Javon Harrison, a receiver who also played quarterback at Huber Heights Wayne in suburban Dayton. The three were redshirting and didn't dress for the game or travel with the Bearcats.
VanDyne, a Miami freshman who married his longtime sweetheart last month, had been best friends with Flick since second grade, according to a statement from VanDyne's family that was released by the hospital. They asked for prayers for the families of those involved in the crash.
"My heart breaks for all the boys and their families, especially Ben's," VanDyne's mother, Lynn VanDyne, said in the statement.
The 6-foot-6, 272-pound Flick was a guard at Hamilton High School, where he made the All-Greater Miami Conference second team as a senior. His visitation was scheduled Tuesday night at Hamilton High School's gymnasium, followed by a funeral Mass on Wednesday morning.
The Bearcats have a bye this week. Athletics director Whit Babcock has said the school is doing what it can to support the families and its student-athletes.
In a statement, Miami University President David Hodge also offered condolences for loved ones of VanDyne and Flick.
"Our hearts go out to the many members of their families and communities who are mourning this loss together, as are we," Hodge said.
