Greek pair withdraws from beach tournament
ATHENS, Greece -- Greek beach volleyball pair Thanassis Michalopoulos and Pavlos Beligratis are withdrawing from the Olympics, citing a leg injury to Beligratis.
The sixth-seeded Greeks were scheduled to play Argentina's Mariano Baracetti and Martin Conde on Wednesday night.
Beligratis injured his right leg Monday during Greece's 16-21, 26-24, 10-15 loss to South Africans Colin Pocock and Gershon Rorich.
"It is an unfortunate moment," Michalopoulos said in a statement released by the Olympic News Service. "Pavlos could not overcome his injury and we had to make the difficult decision."
Beligratis is the son of Athanasios Beligratis, the head of the Hellenic Volleyball Federation, the governing body for the sport in Greece.
