Defending Olympic slalom champion Vidal injured, uncertain for race

TURIN, Italy -- Defending Olympic slalom champion Jean-Pierre Vidal of France broke his left arm while skiing for pleasure Friday and withdrew from Saturday's race.

French ski team technical director Gerard Rougier said the arm needs to be immobilized and Vidal may need surgery.

Vidal, who turned 29 on Friday, had planned to retire after the slalom, the last Alpine event on the Turin Olympic calendar.
