BRISTOL, Conn. -- Former Mexican soccer star Hugo Sanchez has been hired by ESPN as an analyst for ESPN Deportes.

The 56-year-old Sanchez was a guest analyst for the network during last year's World Cup. He will appear at least two days each week on " Futbol Picante" and will assist in coverage of the Mexican league and Mexico's national team.

He had 234 goals for Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid from 1981-92 and is third on La Liga's career scoring list behind Lionel Messi (258) and Telmo Zarra (251).

Sanchez scored 29 goals in 58 international appearances, played in three World Cups and coached El Tri from 2006-08.

ESPN announced his hiring Wednesday.
