Rooney to serve two-game suspension
MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United will not appeal Wayne Rooney's two-game Champions League ban which rules him out of matches against Benfica and Lille.
The 19-year-old England striker was ejected in the second half of United's 0-0 draw with Spanish club Villarreal a week ago after sarcastically applauding referee Kim Milton Nielsen for showing him a yellow card.
UEFA imposed a one-game ban for the expulsion and an additional one-match suspension because Rooney swore at Nielsen in reaction to the red card.
United had until Friday to contest the ban but announced Tuesday it would accept the punishment.
Rooney will miss home games against Benfica on Sept. 27 and Lille on Oct. 18.
