Volandri beats Lapentti for Palermo title
PALERMO, Sicily -- Filippo Volandri of Italy won the second title of his career Sunday at the Palermo International, beating Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Volandri, ranked 38th, became the first Italian winner in Palermo in 22 years. The last Italian champion on the red clay courts of Palermo was Francesco Cancellotti, who beat Miloslav Mecir in the 1984 final.
Volandri was runner-up at Palermo the last two years, losing the 2004 final to Igor Andreev and in 2005 to Tomas Berdych. He improved to 2-6 in career finals. His previous title came at St. Poelten, Austria, in 2004.
Lapentti was playing his first final since 2003. Ranked as high as No. 6 in 1999, Lapentti is currently at No. 84. The last of his five career titles came in St. Poelten in 2002.
