We here at ESPNtheMag.com strive to keep our pages free of errors. But every once and a while, we drop the ball. One particularly egregious example, appearing in the online version of The Magazine, was brought to our attention last night:
While quoting congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-Fla.) in the Rays' season preview, we posted the following:
"I'll be honest with you: I never liked the Devil Rays, so Rays is a fresh start."
Congressman Bilirakis, however, actually said (as correctly reported in the current issue of The Mag on newsstands now):
"I'll be honest with you: I never liked the name Devil Rays, so Rays is a fresh start."
We apologized last night to the Congressman, and asked if he had any additional praise for the Rays. He did:
"I think the Rays are an exciting team. An improved pitching staff and a better defense up the middle, as well as the addition of veterans Cliff Floyd and Troy Percival in the off-season, makes for a much stronger team this year. Being a huge baseball fan, I hope to catch as many games as I possibly can with my family."
Thanks for setting us straight, Rep. Bilirakis. Again, we apologize and we'll never bust on Florida for screwing up the 2000 election again.
