Lakey Peterson hits the wave running

Lakey Peterson will take you along for the ride this summer as she travels the world and conquers its biggest waves.

My name is Lakey Peterson, and I'm a professional surfer from Santa Barbara, Calif. I hope you're all getting ready for an epic summer with me. I'll be taking you through some amazing journeys, including a ton of international surf trips.

So far my summer has been busier than ever! I recently got home from Rio de Janeiro, where I was competing in one of the World Championship Tour events for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP). There are 17 girls on tour, and throughout the year we compete for the world title. The waves in Rio were small but fun, and the culture was amazing. I ended up placing fifth overall, which is OK. I'm definitely looking forward to the next one in France in July and hoping for a better result.

Many of you are planning to hit the beaches this summer, and perhaps you want to learn to surf. Let me take this opportunity to give you some fun tips. You're NEVER too old to learn to surf. So don't be afraid to get out there.

If you live in California or you're going to be visiting me out here, my three favorite beaches for beginner surfers are Mondos Beach in Ventura, Doheny State Beach in Dana Point and Huntington Beach.

There are local surf schools where you can take a lesson, which will help you get down some initial techniques and make you feel more comfortable.

I hope this motivates you to grab a soft-top surfboard (it's easiest to learn on) and get out there. At first it's hard, but stick with it -- there's really nothing else like it, in my opinion at least.

My new movie "Zero to 100" just came out this summer. It hit the No. 1 spot on iTunes during the first week, which was an amazing feeling.

"Zero to 100" tells the story of my life, and it really shows the ups and downs of being a female athlete on tour, as well as being a young woman in general. There are tons of fun surf scenes as I travel around the world. I also wanted to send a deeper message about what you can achieve in life if you just go for it, and don't let anyone else define who you are. I've been given the opportunity to reach a lot of people with a great story.

My film shows a side of me that most people haven't seen. It's pretty raw and honest, and it's 100 percent me, just like this blog.

My next stop is Mexico and then France for that next ASP World Surf Event. I'm already thinking about the U.S. Open of surfing at the end of July in Huntington Beach! If you're in California, come cheer for me as I defend my title. It's going to be a great summer for all of us!
