Google Remembers Tennis Pioneer Althea Gibson

When you watch Sloane Stephens and Serena Williams pop fastballs over the net this U.S. Open, take a moment to think about those who made it possible for them to be awesome.

Google did.

Tennis pioneer Althea Gibson was honored with her own Google Doodle on Monday, the 87th anniversary of her birth and the first day of the U.S. Open. Gibson is the first African-American woman to play in and win Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals, the precursor to the U.S. Open.

The action-packed doodle moves across the screen to volley and return balls.
