Our fans are a huge part of us

The Villa Drum Squad has traveled to Oregon, Stanford, San Diego State and Washington and, of course, has been a fixture at all six home games.

Since my last blog we have gone 3-0 with wins over San Diego State, Wyoming and Washington. This brings our record to 8-1-1 as we head into conference play. We open up at the newest members of our conference, the University of the Pacific, Saturday at 7 p.m.

“Where you go, we will follow.” This is part of a cheer our student section chants at our games. This year, the Villa Drum Squad and other members of the student section have taken this to heart.

We have played 10 games this season, six at home and four on the road. We traveled to Oregon, Stanford, San Diego State and Washington. And believe it or not, members of our student section, led by the kilt-wearing and drum-playing Villa Drum Squad, have been at every one of our games.

They made the trip to Eugene, Ore., to watch us beat the Ducks 2-1 in overtime. They left at 1 a.m. the morning of the Stanford game to drive down to Palo Alto, Calif., to watch us tie the highly ranked Cardinal. Thirty students appeared in sunny San Diego to help us overcome a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 over the Aztecs. And last Sunday they piled in a coach bus and made a fashionably late entrance to the game as we beat Washington 3-0.

Ladies and gentlemen, if that’s not commitment, I do not know what is.

I said it in my first blog, and I will probably keep saying it, but our fans make up a huge part of who we are. They are a main reason why I am so proud to put on a Portland jersey. They make showing up to play a game so much easier, and it’s nice to know they will always have our back.

Until next time.
