Tonya Harding became the first American woman to land a triple axel in competition at the 1991 U.S. championships.

Happy birthday to former figure skater Tonya Harding, who turns 43 today. Despite winning the 1991 U.S. championships and racking up a handful of other impressive results in national and international competitions, Harding is best known for her alleged role in the Jan. 6, 1994, attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan. The story goes something like this: Harding’s ex-husband and her bodyguard hired a hit man to break Kerrigan’s leg ahead of the U.S. Championships so she would be unable to compete. The rest is tabloid history. In March of 1994, Harding pled guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution of the attackers. She received three years' probation, 500 hours of community service and a fine. She was subsequently banned for life by the United States Figure Skating Association and stripped of her 1994 U.S. title. Since the scandal, Harding has launched failed attempts at both a boxing and a singing career. She was recently a commentator on TruTV’s “World’s Dumbest...” and is the mother to a young son.
