Special Olympics close to heart
Hey guys! Just wanted to check in and let you all know what I've been up to. Last night I had the chance to be a guest coach at the New Trier Special Olympics basketball practice.
I had so much fun interacting with the athletes and teaching some basketball skills. One of the athletes even challenged me to a game of one-on-one. It was an amazing opportunity to be able to be a part of a practice that allows the athletes to socialize, make friends and get active on the basketball court.
The Special Olympics is an organization that is very close to my heart. Growing up with my sister, I was able to see the amazing positive impact that socialization can have on children and individuals with special needs. Opportunities like this allow the children to display their gifts and simply have fun.
While I was at the camp with the intention of teaching the athletes skills on the basketball court, I experienced what I always do when I am surrounded by a group of individuals with special needs. I actually learned more than I taught! These athletes taught me to use the talents I have been given and to always smile.
Until next time,
