Predicting The World Cup Quarterfinals

Now down to eight teams, which countries will advance to the Women's World Cup semifinals? And what are Julie Foudy's X factors that could decide each match?

Which team will win: China or United States?

Our experts unanimously predict the U.S. to win this rematch of the 1999 Women's World Cup final, despite playing without Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday.

0 -- China
12 -- United States

Foudy's X factors: Even with two fewer days of rest and two starters out, the Americans should still overcome China. The United States has showed all tournament just how very solid it is defensively, and China should have a hard time breaking down the U.S. team. China is an organized, technical team, but it does not have the game-changing players it had in 1999 (read: Sun Wen).

Which team will win: Germany or France?

Germany is the overwhelming favorite in this match, which pits the world's top-ranked team against the No. 3 French.

10 -- Germany
2 -- France

Foudy's X factors: This very easily could be the World Cup final. Instead, two of the best teams in the world face off in the quarterfinals. You hate to see one go, but Germany has the slight edge here. The Germans have been the most productive team on offense this World Cup; their 19 goals are more than twice as many as any of the other teams left have (France has nine; Switzerland ranks second overall with 11 goals but was eliminated in the round of 16). Coupled with their consistency and mentality, they will be a tough team for France to knock off.

Which team will win: Australia or Japan?

Australia upset Brazil, but our panel thinks the defending World Cup champion has the upper hand.

2 -- Australia
10 -- Japan

Foudy's X factors: Like the Japan-Netherlands game in the round of 16, this match could be one of the best games of this World Cup. Australia will continue to impress the world with its speed and spirit, but Japan will take this one -- barely. Australia gets two extra days of rest, and that's a huge positive: The Aussies will need fresh legs and that attacking spirit to beat a very steady Japanese team.

Which team will win: England or Canada?

After England won its first knockout game in Women's World Cup history, our experts think it can do it again as a slight favorite and eliminate host Canada.

7 -- England
5 -- Canada

Foudy's X factors: Here are two teams that have sputtered on the offensive side at this World Cup, but England showed its mettle with the come-from-behind win against Norway (and two great goals to go with it). It is great to see the hosts still in this, but unless the Canadians can get superstar goal scorer Christine Sinclair more involved, this could be the end of their run at the World Cup.
