Hoops pairings we'd like to see
After seeing videos of Zaire Wade's filthy crossover and deadly pull-up jumper, I think it's safe to say Dwyane's 10-year-old son has the top spot in the 2023 NBA draft on lock. As for 2036, well, the NBA or WNBA's No. 1 pick that year may just go to the future son or daughter of basketball's new "It" couple, Kevin Durant and Monica Wright.
The Thunder superstar and the Lynx guard met at the 2006 McDonald's All American games, and while it's not clear how long they've been more than just friends, Wright confirmed they are now engaged to be married.
It's a great story, one right out of the movies. Two young basketball phenoms meet as teens, find success separately at different universities, go pro and then reconnect, promising to guard only each other for as long as they both shall live. In a Hollywood twist, Wright has the exact same name as the lead character in the 2000 romantic comedy "Love And Basketball."
Somebody get these two a reality show, already.
While we're waiting on BET or VH1 to green-light that gem, allow me to suggest a few more NBA-WNBA supercouples I'd like to see (my apologies to any existing WAGs or HABs whose happy relationships I might be sabotaging).
Joakim Noah and Liz Cambage: The Bulls center is known as much for his big hair and big personality as he is for his play, so he needs a lady who's just as feisty. Enter Cambage, the 6-foot-8 Aussie who sometimes sports an edgy, partially-shaved 'do and regularly rocks fashion-forward looks from Aussie designers like sass & bide.
The Shock center, born to a Nigerian father and Australian mother, is funny, outgoing and worldly, a perfect match for Noah, the son of a former Miss Sweden and French tennis star Yannick Noah. An added bonus? The 21-year-old Cambage has complained about dating men who were shorter than her in the past; she could wear her highest heels when out with the 6-11 Noah.
Blake Griffin and Skylar Diggins: The scene-stealing, commercial-making Clippers star and the spotlight-loving, trend-setting Shock rookie would make a perfect duo, both on and off the court. Griffin's great sense of humor and comedic timing have made him a league favorite (well, that and his explosive dunks), while Diggins has earned herself a huge fan base with her sick hoops skills and confident swagger.
Griffin, a 24-year-old Oklahoma City native, can give the Tulsa newbie tons of tips to help her adjust to her new summer home, and Diggins can introduce the Clippers' budding comedic star to her agent, Jay-Z, who knows just about everyone in L.A. Put 'em together and this dynamic duo could be just as powerful in Hollywood as they are on the hardwood.
Dwight Howard and Tina Thompson: Hear me out on this one! It can be tough for women in their 30s to find a man over 35 who isn't already married, so it's no surprise that many of Thompson's counterparts in the NBA have already settled down. The 38-year-old Storm forward will retire at the end of this season after playing in each of the WNBA's 17 seasons; now's the time for her to embrace the cougar lifestyle.
She needs a young man who will appreciate that she's still "got game" (both on and off the court) and the new Houston Rockets center needs someone to calm him down after years of flip-flopping and team-changing. Howard's public image would also get a boost from dating Thompson, who has been a role model as a player and longtime spokesperson for the WNBA. Sounds crazy, but when it comes to love, anything goes! Plus, we already know Thompson likes hoopers -- her ex and the father of her 9-year-old son is former NBA player Damon Jones.
Marco Belinelli and Elena Delle Donne: "Beli," who recently left Chicago to sign a two-year deal with the Spurs, is a perfect fit for the Sky rookie with Italian roots. The 27-year-old from just outside Bologna has been spotted in the front row of fashion shows in Milan and routinely makes the NBA's "Best Hair" team, while the 23-year-old Delaware native recently got her golden tresses styled on E! and currently leads the WNBA in All-Star voting.
Belinelli spent last season with the Bulls, so he can take the Windy City's newest superstar to some of his favorite Italian restaurants, like RPM Italian. Or, even better, the two can cook some delicious dishes from the motherland together -- Delle Donne is an admitted foodie who loves cooking Italian delicacies with her mom.
Sounds like amore to me!
