Florida State's Jessica Burroughs taken by USSSA Pride with first pick in NPF draft

Reigning ACC pitcher of the year Jessica Burroughs was the No. 1 overall selection Monday night by the USSSA Pride.

As a kid, she was proud to claim ducks, hamsters, guinea pigs, dogs and cats as pets. She gave gymnastics and golf a whirl before settling on softball. She was the ACC pitcher of the year last year for Florida State. Her teammates think she's goofy.

Now Jessica Burroughs is also the No. 1 pick in the 2017 National Pro Fastpitch draft.

Burroughs, a Georgia native who is 22-2 with a 0.98 ERA this season for the Seminoles, was taken first Monday night by the Florida-based USSSA Pride. Teammate Alex Powers also was selected by the Pride with the No. 10 pick.

It was a good night all around for the Seminoles (44-3-1, 21-0 ACC), who remained undefeated in the ACC with a dramatic 5-4 win over Louisville to complete a three-game sweep.

But the Seminoles weren't the only ones celebrating.

LSU teammates Sahvanna Jaquish and Bailey Landry both were selected in the first round and were the only two position players among the top five. Jaquish was taken by the reigning champion Chicago Bandits with the third pick, and Landry was taken by the Texas Charge at No. 5.

Minnesota pitcher Sara Groenewegen was selected by the Akron Racers at No. 2, and Cal Poly pitcher Sierra Hyland was taken by the Bandits at No. 4.

Katiyana Mauga of Arizona, who stands in third place on the NCAA's career home run list, was taken sixth by the Charge. She was one of four Wildcats drafted, the most of any team.

The NPF season opens June 1.
