No. 1 prospect down to two: Will it be UConn or South Carolina for Christyn Williams?
Christyn Williams, the No. 1 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100, announced on Saturday that she's heading to either Connecticut or South Carolina.
The 5-foot-11 shooting guard and three-time USA Basketball medalist plans to announce her decision Nov. 10. She had also been considering UCLA, Tennessee and Texas. The early signing period opens Nov. 8.
Williams said she's unsure what the deciding factor will be between UConn and South Carolina and thinks both schools have a world of good to offer.
"I'm just patiently waiting and talking with the coaching staffs and continuing to build relationships," she said.
Obviously, Williams would be a welcome addition to either school. The Gamecocks, the reigning national champions, already have a commitment from Destanni Henderson, a 5-foot-8 point guard and the No. 9 national prospect. UConn, which has won the national title a record 11 times, is still looking for its first commitment after No. 2 Charli Collier, who had originally committed to Geno Auriemma, changed her mind last month and committed to Texas instead.
Williams is a two-time Arkansas Gatorade Player of the Year at Central Arkansas Christian (North Little Rock, Arkansas). She averaged 26.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks last season as a junior.
When asked about the fast-approaching deadline to announce her decision on Nov. 10, Williams didn't sweat.
"That's the deadline," she said. "I'll have my mind made up."
